It sounds like a slice of bread and bliss are synonymous.

Some are hungry for the material stimulation that comes from the nutritional factors of the bread. Some are hungry for the mental comfort that comes from the release of the pressure effecting the instinctual centers related to the metabolic nutrition of the body. Some are hungry for the mental stimulation of ease and comfort due to the suppression of the instinctual hunger centers.
Any one of these any combination of all of them or part of them can be labled "bliss" but that can only come from the interpretation and determination made by the individual subject to the hunger. And if nothing is more available the individual might take into account this activity and make good of it considering it something more than nothing.

A slice of bread is only better than nothing if you believe it is. Ergo, a slice of bread is better than bliss if you believe....as with a fate worse than death.
