There are a lot of summer study abroad programs for high school students, but most of them are not run by universities, who are too busy trying to run their own programs. Most are run by commercial enterprises.

Rotary International has a form of methods and takes very well care of its scholars. I did a 12 months-lengthy application with them 20+ years in the past, and it modified the path of my existence. I cannot suggest it enormously adequate. If you'll be able to swing it, make the leap and do a entire 12 months overseas.

My brother just went and bummed around Europe between his junior and senior year, no set plans, flew standby.

After his senior year, he work for two months at a Youth Hostel in Germany, then bummed around for another month. Again he flew standby.
