I need this info because I am planning to appeal my property tax amount. I bought my home in 2005 and it is obvious that the values have dropped since; but instead of dropping them, the assessors office, keep increasing them. I have contacted them and there is a form online that we can fill out if we want to appeal. But I have not been able to find a website that gives me info on comparable homes sold as far back as 2006. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I know in my county, at the county website for the assessors office, you can search by neighborhood and find home sales for several years back. Dig around their website and see if you can find it.

Go to your town/county office. Home sales are public information. It might take some time, but you should be able to find some comparable sales this way. Also, if you know a realtor or a real estate appraiser with access to MLS (Multiple Listing Service), they might be able to help you. Keep in mind that assessed values have been lagging the market values for some time, so the towns may still be increasing the assessed values to catch up with the market, even though the market values may be currently coming down a bit. Before you bother to appeal, check with your local land office for similar properties to see what they are assessed at. If they are similarly overassessed, you have no complaint. There is no rule that an assessment value cannot exceed current market values. If the municipality wants to assess ALL properties at 200% of market value, it can do so. As long as everyone is assessed at the same percentage of market value, the system is operating fairly.
