It's alright to leave them out past the new year. However you might want to take down some of the items that Christmas has come and gone such as:

advent calander (the days have past and it's over)
nativity
santas items (anything relating to santa)
stockings (your not waiting for Santa anymore)

If you want your place to look more like new years you can update your tree with
-black /gold and silver balls (should be cheap now)
-instead of a angel or star on top put the garland type tree topper that looks like fireworks.
-take all the decorations off your tree and put up balloons on it in silver, gold and black.

As New Year's Eve is still considered part of the holiday season, leave your decorations up for a more festive feel to the party.

Id suggest to leave up snowmen and more winter type decorations, take down Santa and religious type stuff. Leave the tree up for sure so everyone can see it!

I say leave them up. You probably want your house to look festive so why not! Maybe take down any thing that says Merry Christmas, but if you have any winterish things, thats ok! I dont take mine down until after New Years!

I have already removed them down, it's another different approach to welcome the 2008
