The family was the DeFeo family. They were killed by their son 'Ronald DeFeo JR' 13 months BEFORE the house was sold to the Lutz family. No one in the Lutz family was killed, they escaped the 'horror'. :)
The sequel 'Amityville 2:The Possesion' was one of Hollywood's first 'prequels'. The DeFeo's name was changed to Montelli for the movie and Ronald's name changed to 'Sonny'.
