I know that it is an ancient structure but its not the oldest, has anyone heard about the bronze age temples in Malta which are 4,000 years old (oldest structures in Europe if not in the world) and are planned with care (the sunlight reaches the altar at the equinox) and are buildings scattered trough an island?
Why do you fuss all over stone hedge and ignore other structures? Why didn`t they become a wonder of the ancient world?

I had a mistake the temples date to 4,000BC and not 4,000 years.

The ggantija temples are the world`s oldest free standing structures, and Stone Henge isn`t 10,000 years old but 5,100 years old and the ggantija temple was built 5,500 years ago.

This isn`t a wild rant but I thought that the temples were forgotten, over shadowed just because they`re situated in a small overlooked island.
Stone Hegne isn`t rubbish but if they`re a world wonder why shouldn`t these temples be, they`re older and more beautiful, experts even think that they once had a ceiling.
I did this to arouse attention and not to attack stone henge.

I have been to the Maltese temples as I study megalithic culture--they are fascinating places, no doubt about it.
No one ever claimed Stonehenge was the 'oldest' megalithic monument; the Irish tomb of Newgrange is older & so are many of the megaliths of Brittany.
What makes Stonehenge different is that it is unique in its structure, with its mortice & tenon joints and lintels. It is also the result of nearly a thousand years of different changes as well, with at least 3 different cultural groups adding their own touches. It also does not stand in isolation; it is ringed by 300 burial mounds and is 2 miles away from a huge prehistoric settlement, where there were at least 3/4 massive wooden temples all functioning at the same time as Stonehenge. They are all linked into one huge complex which at one time people wouldn't have believed possible of stone & bronze age people who lived in a place which was, back then, at the very edge of the civilised world.
As in Malta, Stonehenge has sun alignments, the main ones being Winter Solstice sunset and Summer Solstice sunrise. There are also lunar alignments based on the moon's metetonic cycle and its a possibility it was used to predict lunar eclipses also. Many megalithic monuments have solar/lunar alignments; it would seem to be a major feature of the builders' religion.

America didn't invent the aeroplane, car,TV,radio or computer; all these facets of daily life plus the train opriginally eminated from Britain or France. Many international companies are American, but many are European such as Airbus, Siemens, Mercedes Benz etc. Much of the American long distance bus system is owned by British transport companies such as First Group and Stagecoach; British companies such as ICI and British Aerospace export throughout the world including to America; the London based financial dealing industry is one of the biggest in the world. As for America being the beacon of freedom - I have never encountered so many petty rules and bureaucracy governing every aspect of life as I encountered on visits to America. More importantly, and here America and Britain have a great deal in common, the broad mass of the population are kept largely uneducated and conditioned by a powerful dumbed down media to see only material and monetary gain as having any real value. In playing the role of 'superpower' America is as hated around the world as it is admired; the cost of the continual wars and invasions has created an enormous national debt which no President has properly dealt with, and even threatens the minority of Americans who are still wealthy and live an affluent lifestyle.

>ignore other structures
Didn't a Briton first excavate the structures and weren't they then re-covered?
Despite any other structures Stonehenge and Avebury are still ancient structures and entirely worth their status as a World Heritage Site as is the Ggantija site. There is archaeological evidence of wooden structures from 8,000 BC near Stonehenge (now preserved under a part of the car park)

Why shouldn't we be? The fact that we are proud of OUR heritage doesn't detract from that of other countries, or mean that we are not interested in their past. Nor do we 'ignore other structures'. For example, Brits have been very active over the years in the archaeology of Egypt. You really do detract from any point you wish to raise by making such wildly inaccurate comments.

So what you're saying is that, in your world, it's only acceptable to be proud of your heritage if it's the oldest of it's example in the world?
I think that says much more about you than it does about the British.

It must be damned difficult to get a "stone hedge" to grow. They should be proud. Perhaps you mean Stone Henge??
