The mockingbird is a symbol for innocent things. One example in the book is:Tom Robinson. He was an innocent man, but thanks to racism in that time period, he was killed. HE was the mockingbird that didn't do anything. Also, after Tom's death was revealed, the person who wrote his obituary (sorry I forgot his name) says that his death was like the slaying of innocent songbirds(hint hint).
Another example was Boo Radley. He was in his house, and everyone called him a criminal, but he was really a good man. Bothering him and trying to get him out of his comfort zone was also like killing a mockingbird, because obviously Boo doesn't want the attention, so the kids should just leave him be.

The point of the title is mockingbirds are innocent because in this book it says all they do is sing beautiful music for people to listen to and don't harm anyone and yet people shoot at them just like Jem wanted to in the book. The mockingbird represents Tom robinson because he is innocent and killed for no reason, it also represents boo radley because he is locked in his house and discriminated for no reason he is also innocent. The title actually fits the book perfect. And in the book it shows how scout grows up and learns how things are killed and discriminated against for no reason.

Wasn't there a piece of dialog in the book that went something like "A mocking bird doesn't do nothing but sing. There is no reason to kill it."
I think the title is reference to this piece of dialog. So it is "To kill something that has done nothing wrong." I don't think a better title is needed.
Besides, who cares about a title? It's the inside that's the good stuff. It's like an Oreo.

Do you remember where Atticus talks to Scout about the mockingbird? He talks about how it's bad to kill a mockingbird because it does nothing but produce beautiful music. The bird is innocent as was Scout until the summer she learned so much about prejudice and hatred. Scout is the mockingbird.

I hope you enjoyed the book. It's one of my favorites.
