The Twelve Days
The "12 days" originated when days began at sunset. They went from sunset on Dec 25th to sunset on Jan. 6th. Because days now start at midnight, in some places the 12 days start on Dec. 25th, in others on Dec. 26th.

Yes the 12 days are the Christmas season, which is what the Church celebrates too. The 12th day is the feast of the Epiphany, which celebrates the arrival of the three wise men (now more often referred to as Kings) to the infant Jesus. So happy 5th day of Christmas to you.
