My little brother's 24th birthday is coming up and I'd like to get him a nice framed poster (like from www.art.com) for his room. He lives in a group home for handicapped persons like himself. He functions at about a grade-school level but I don't know of any specific interests that he has. Any good ideas for a cool poster/print/tapesty? I'm currently living it Italy so spending time with him isn't an option this year. Thanks!

I think Italy has an abundance of culture that is some of the most stunning in the world. A framed picture sounds great.
How about a picture of one of their famous landmarks, or one of the beautiful chapels? I know that anything you get will be appreciated, as you are not going to be able to get over to see him soon. Ciao Bella!!

Get what a 24 year old man would like.
Don't think that because he "functions at about a grade-school level " that you should give him something for "kids" - that would only reinforce the idea of disable people are like kids. Give him something that he will enjoy looking at but also will promote a sense of age appropriate and dignity to him as an ADULT.

What saddens me is walking around town and see a 45 year old person dressed in "Girly pink" clothes because the support workers feels that she function at a 6 year old level then she can be seen in girl's clothes.

May be give him a beautiful Italian landscape - may be of the place where you live. That might brighten up his room and he can think of you when he sees it. Include a photo of you with it and a small note so he knows who you are and that you are the person who sent the poster.

He may functions at about a grade-school level and he might never grow out of that but if everyone treat him as a child he will NEVER has a chance to grow.

There are lots of different disabilities, so I'm not clear on exactly what's wrong with your brother - also grade school runs from k-8 so that's a large difference in functionality too. I don't think you're providing enough information about your brother to get a very good answer. Since you don't know what he's interested in either makes it more difficult - so here's what I suggest:

Blow up a picture of your family, with your brother included; a pic where everyone is happy & smiling. This way his family will always be with him. Or maybe not, because it might serve to remind him what he's missing in his life.

Another idea would be something he could draw on himself, like something outlined & then you could send him colored markers to fill it in. Perhaps you could even start it out for him, and it could be something you share. Maybe you could get 2, one for each of you & then you could send each other pictures to show your progress. That way it could be something you could share long-distance.

You could always call his group home, talk to a staff person who knows him well & find out what he's interested in from that person. This way you would get him something you can be sure he would like.

Good luck !

If he functions at a grade-school level, it shoudl not be too comlpciated. What do you know of his interests? In the group home, does he have his own room or share one?
Something that would make him feel good ... a scenic picture or painitng. I like the car idea too (Ferrari) maybe a motorcycle pic?

You didn't spend anytime with him before this year? If he is 24 you must know if he is interested in cars? or disney? or girls?

Since you are in Italy what about a Ferrari, Maserati, Bugatti, or Lamborghini poster? My 24 year old son has a thing for yellow or red Ferrari and he has posters of both I bought when I was in Italy for him.

Heterosexuality means one is attracted to the opposite sex. If he is not attracted to men, than he could have posters of naked men and still be straight. Though it would bring about some questions as to why he has these posters up.

It would really depend on what sort of things your brother is into. My son has some Fantasy Art in his home, its so beautiful. Try Googling for some of the artists and see for your self. - - Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell are great artists

I'd get him some really cool looking outdoors scene. Maybe a scene of the ocean with surfers, or sailing, or skiing. Something that he can look at and feel that he is in a different place.

I think the best bet would be if you call the staff that works with him every day and find out if there is anything in particular he is interested in.
