Anything by PK Dick. I love Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.
Then take sci fi to the max and read some great cyberpunk. William Gibson's Neuromancer and Neal Stephenson's Diamond Age.

Some great suggestions so far but, there are also classics: H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Adolphus Huxley, George Orwell
More modern: Riddley Walker (by Russel Hoban), some stuff by J.G. Ballard, Kurt Vonnegut and Ursula LeGuin.

Classic:
Anything by Ray Bradbury, Isaac Assimov, or Robert Silverberg.
Modern:
Greg Benford, Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game will be known as a classic!), David Brin, Nancy Kress, and Connie Willis (who has won more Hugos and Nebulas than I can remember.).
