Personally Johnny and Peter are dated names. Look up names on baby name websites.

I think Jet is a cool name for a boy. How about a funny name. Jet Fighter. :) He could get teased for it all the time, that would give him an internal struggle to get past. :) AND it sounds sci fi.

I also like Cruz for a cool boy name. (My youngest son's name is Cruz) Cruz Fighter? :)

It'd help to know more about your book.

I have to say, I agree with the previous answer. Johnny and Peter are both names that many kids will associate with their grandfather's generation. You mentioned that your novel is sci fi, so you might even use a nickname instead of a real name. It seems like many kids in that age group find nicknames 'cool', and with a sci fi novel, you would have the freedom to make the nickname seem natural.

Also, go ahead and just write your stories without dividing them up. If you set yourself boundaries, like one book for every year, at times they will get drawn out, and at others they will end up rushed. Even the HP series had those problems from time to time.

Johnny Cricket has a ring to it?
It would be great if every series a charcter had to battle something that was an enemy to them? You know what i mean? Like a family secret that makes them enemies or summat??! =S
Then there friends would all chip in and help them, or even put a twist in about a friend betraying them
OOOoooo!!!
Then you have a adventure nd sum morals for kids to learn =]

Hope this helps?
Would love a best answer?
Hehe
Good luck with the novel

I like peter fighter. Fighter would be a cool last name for a strong willed person. And it would be a really funny name for a geeky little wimp.

Why don't you pass the names by a bunch of kids? I'm 56. You need to survey your potential reading audience.
