When I was a high school teacher, kids would often ask me what brands kids wore when I was in high school. They were stunned when I said none!

We liked to be in style, but if your mother could make clothes in those styles, you were really lucky! I sewed my own clothes and got lots of compliments.

I do remember them, and I wish it would return to that time that there wasn't, there has been a lot of children suffer just because their parents couldn't afford the ridicules prices of these so called "designer" labels, I feel so sorry for parents of youngsters of today with the added pressure to try and get this stuff for their kids so they dont get taunted at school, not all schools insist on uniforms, thats where the problem lies

I sure do. The only "designer" clothes I wore were the ones I designed myself, and I didn't put a label on them!
I don't know just when the designer label fashion trend took hold, Maybe with Calvin Klien and the "Calvins" or sometime before that, but it was a brilliant stroke of the designers and clothing manufacturers to put their names front and center on their clothing. Make them a status symbol. Beautiful, they get people to buy their clothing, with their names on them, thereby getting the customers to to pay for their advertising!
Wish I'd thought of that.

My mom made a lot of my clothes in the fifties like, pop-tops with the little fringe all around and straight -cut skirts with a kick pleat in the back and shirt waist dresses. We all looked the same in the styles we wore but the different fabrics made it so we looked different at the same time.

I was always very well dressed in school. My mother sewed most of my clothes. She was as excellent seamstress. The only brand I remember is Levi. My brothers wore them.

Nowadays it's not so much whether you choose to wear the brands, it's whether you can even find plain clothes anymore. Every single clothes company nowadays for some reason has to stamp their name on the front. I didn't live in the days you talk about but I wish it were so that you could easily find plain clothes.

My mom made our clothes also. We picked out a coat at Christmas time (that was our present) and wore it for years. I miss those days. We had 2 pairs of shoes, school and dress.

Yes, of course I remember. Wasn't Fruit of the Loom a designer label?

Yes, I sure do remember. I got my clothes from Penney's & Hill's Dept. store. I was still in style when I was in school, especially high school, but there were no brand names to ask for. There was no Gap, Abercrobie, Hollister, Old Navy, etc.

I still do not wear designer labels and never will. In school most of my clothes were made by mom and myself.

I don't remember too many labels when I was growing up. I try not to buy anything with the name on the item that people can see. The company is not paying me to advertise.
