How might going to a college close to home help shape one's college experience?

It depends on how you let it shape your experience. One of my housemates had parents living a half hour away. Every week her mom did her laundry for her, and her parents took her grocery shopping, or even just took her grocery list and shopped for her if she wanted to stay home. They wrote her rent checks for her, and gave her spending money every month, which she spent on clothes or DVDs within a few days. So she never learned how to budget money, or how to be independent. Her mom didn't even allow her to learn how to drive. She was always asking me or my other housemate for rides, or to tell her what the weather was, or to look something up on the internet for her, because she was so used to mommy taking care of her that she didn't know how to do anything for herself.

This is, of course, an extreme example. But in general, the closer you are to your parents, the more involved they can be in your life, which might build a stronger relationship with them, but can also stifle your growth as an independent person.
