Sorry, but the closest thing that comes to an "opposite" of light is indeed the absence of it.

Some things just do not have actual contrary partners, such as the opposite of east being west. For example, what's the opposite of a human being? Or the opposite of water?

The opposite of hot is cold, which is merely a change of temperature. So the only opposite light can have is non-light -- ergo, darkness.

I think that's about as good as you're gonna get! Light is the presence of light (kind of...) and darkness is its absence. Alternatively, you have bright and dim. rhsaunders has the right idea, in that some things do not have opposites, there are mere relationships between mediums/concepts.
What is the opposite of blue? Orange? What is this based on? It is not an opposite per se... =oD

It depends on what you mean by light. The common mans opinion of what is the opposite of light is darkness, but if you are meaning the metaphoric meaning of light, It would be disbelief or un-understanding. If light is looked at as spiritually awake, then the opposite would be to be "asleep".

Not everything has an opposite; oppositeness is a convenient term for some relationships, but many things aren't relatable in the sense of opposites.

According to modern physics the photon is it's own anti-particle, so the opposite of light is actually light.
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

I have the answer, per see technically no one can see without any form of light so the answer is: Nothing.

Without the light of street lights and the moon you wouldn't be able to see anything without the light of the sun nothing... there would be nothing to see.

well to philosophers (and many religions) light is knowledge. the true question is what is the opposite of knowledge?
philo - love
sophy - knowledge
therefore light is philosophy
philosophy - answering unanswered questions
therefore light is the answering of unanswered questions
we can postulate that light is answering
the opposite of answering is not answering, therefore the opposite of light is indecisiveness

The absence is the opposite. Light is the "something" and darkness is the "nothing."
