The months of the year have been changed around many times, but some of the reasons for having it January 1st is because its the end of our year(how we have the months arranged now) and it is very near to winter soltice-which is when days begin to get longer-starting out a new year of light

Once upon a time someone brought up a good point on a site called Yahoo Answers and history was changed...

Seriously you bring up some good points that I never thought about. I don't know how to answer all I know is that if it were to change then people would be confused, the whole month system might change it would be complicated to change it all..

originally it was...if you look at the way the the zodiac is still printed today it always start in Aries (21 march)(the day of equal days and equal night time)...and the Romans actually had it on the 15th of march

then in 153BC it was changed to 1 January for military reasons by the Romans...and since just about every society in Europe was affected by roman rule...every society in Europe used the roman calender...and the calender spread all over the world for the same reason that it spread all over Europe
