all the power for the bike passes thtough the ignition switch. The switch itself can handle this, but the small pigtail of wires coming out of it are a bit lacking. They melt together over the years, eventually causing a short... then the wires melt.

Usually the damage is contained withing the ignition switch, leaving the rest of the harness intact. Just replace the switch.

Get a manual.
The problem is pretty easy to track down, but you have to know where to start.
