It means that I need to take the first step and get my behind moving. There really is no magic lamp that will provide three wishes, and even if someone wanted to make that lamp work, they must do something first.

I think the Lord helps everyone. What about the ones that fall on hard times no matter how much they try, surely the Lord doesn't ignore them. It just takes alittle longer sometimes to dig out. Those who give up because of dispair, the Lord is still there trying to give them hope. Some are not so lucky to be born in a place where it is easy to help ones self.
EDIT: You do have a good point Tealc, but I guess I was thinking more on the lines of natural diasters or people born into poverty and no matter what they do it is to no avail, with help they are able to overcome it. I think The Lord is with all no matter what.

With respect I say this, but Christopher Reeves (not sure about the other) was surely a wealthy man who could carry on fighting to the end, in being able to afford the things he needed to "help himself", and I just want to add that I am not saying we should just sit back and do nothing for ourselves, I would certailnly not judge anyone though until I had "walked in their shoes"

I have always heard this truism, but recently I heard an explanation, it goes something like this: A man with financial problems would pray several times a day asking God to help him with these problems, by giving him the winning lottery numbers. After years of suffering without an answer to his problems, the man told God he was done. God appeared in the man's dream and asked the man for a little help. God requested that the man at least buy a lottery ticket, so God could help with the winning lottery numbers.

Actually the Scriptures don't say this at all. It is bogus. The real Scriptures state:
Jer 17:5 (NIV) This is what the LORD says: "Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD."
Prov 28:26 (NIV) He who trusts in himself is a fool...

it is so very important so very factual it means that first of all u need to take steps yourself u need to start things yourself u need to work hard yourself u have to sweat yourself only than GOD will help u here is an example
a man was sitting in a mosque he was asking for food from lord plz bless me with food the Holy Prophet Muhammad came in and said u cant just sit here and keep asking u have to go out there yourself work and earn it u
means u have the eyes the legs the hands the energy the talent GOD has given u so use it and get it if u keep sitting there and asking for things they aint gonna decend from heavens so u have to gain it
so here it is a person needs to take initiation and start working himself and lord will help him this proverb actually points out to utilize your talent and energy and points out to work hard and there is nothing in world that u cannot achieve no pain no gain

Hate to say this, but doesn't this sound like a "cover all basis" saying? Not to sound irreligious, but it is a very convenient saying...for there is always an out..."well, God didn't help you because you didn't do enough yourself"! This is one of those cases where, if you work your tail off to get something done, you "thank God." IF all your work doesn't pay off, you "blame yourself for having been a sinner." hmmmmmm. Seems to me that if I am going to do all the work, I should thank myself, and if I fail, I should blame myself. Just a thought . Goldwing

Yes it is true. You cannot sit around and waite for something good to happen. You have to get out and make good things happen for you. But don't rob any banks.

The Lord works in mysterious ways and helps all who seek his help. But you must believe and ask him for it.
