I would really recomend getting Wii Play since you are new to Wii. Wii Play comes with a free Wii remote and it is a very fun collection of awesome mini games that ANYBODY can just pick up and play. Even my parents love those games and they are a lot of fun to play with friends or relatives. It can also help anybody master the controls. I really enjoy this game.
I would also recomend Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga if you like Star Wars. It is so much fun and it looks like it has great re-play value.
Some other games I recomend are
Raymans Raving Rabbids 1 and 2
Both of these games are great and take a long time to play and beat if that is important to you. There is a lot on these games, including a good multiplayer mode so there is a lot to do and they have terrfic replay value, fun to play, lots of humor, fun to watch others play. It's a collection of very fun and offbeat mini games that require a lot of movement.
Big Brain Academy
This is another one of those train your brain games, but it is probably the best one I have seen. You can takes tests to improve your brain score everyday and compete with other people. You will want to play this one everyday because it is so addicting and fun. This is a game everyone can play.
Paper Mario
This is like the old school Mario games except you can switch to 3D too! Very cool and very fun.
Super Mario Galaxy
...Nintedo Power magazine said it was the best game of 2007. I have heard nothing but wonderful things about this game. Buy it now!
Nights
The most beautiful looking game I have ever seen.
The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
a fun fighting game
Shrek the Third
Sounds like it would be a real stinker, but it is actually really fun, its like an old school arcade game. It's 20 dollars at most Walmarts.
Smarty Pants
another train your brain game with trivia challenges where you can dance to earn extra points
Carnival Games
a fun, movement heavy collection of interactve carnival games, this is a fun one for everyone.
If you like music games there is Smooth Moves, Boogie, DDR: Hottest Party, and lots of karoke games like High School Musical Karoke and Hannah Montanna Karoke. I'm not into music games myself so I dont know much about those.
Coming out sometime in early 2008 is Smash Brothers which is something that is going to be very popular, along with Wii Fit and Endless Ocean.
Hope this helps and Happy Wii-ing!

I have different games for different moods. Carnival Games and Super Monkey Ball are party favorites since 4 people can play. I have Zelda for my more serious gaming. My husband and I enjoy playing Lego Star Wars Complete Saga together (it's only as 2 player.) I when I want to feel challenged play Big Brain Academy. I bought Smarty Pants but have not played it yet!
