...when I write in portuguese (my first language)?

Would that be possible?

By the way, I am working on a romance that happens in 1887.

Get a copy of Writers Market and search through it for Foreign Language publishers. You may not find any there. In that case, go to the library reference section and use Literary Marketplace. It isn't a book you can check out. It costs 300 dollars. But it is much more complete than Writers Market. As for the publisher being in your area - don't worry about it. In the era of e mail and fed ex, the publisher can be anywhere.

Why not?

If you have the dream, go for it.

Nearly 11 million people live in Portugal. If you write in Brazilian Portuguese, we're talking about the most populous Latin American country with a population of 188 million.

Research who the top publishers of Portuguese-language books are. Then write as many letters of inquiry as you can.

I'm a firm believer in the power of positive thinking.

Have you considered writing in the language you are most comfortable with, then translating it as your English improves, possibly with help from others?

This gives you the option of publishing for two markets.

You can self-publish anything you want, and there are many companies that will do this for you for free; albeit, there will be a charge per copy printed.

Here is the Web address of one (the one I've used):
