You need either a "crossover" cable or else two normal ethernet cables and an ethernet switch. Then you need to set the addresses on the two machines manually. Do you know how to do this?

That is assuming that you want to connect them to each other but not to the internet. For the internet you need an internet connection, that you must pay for, from an ISP (Internet Service Provider) - usually your phone company or your cable TV company can supply this.

You need a crossover cable because when you are connecting "like ports" you need to have something other than straight through cable. So for example, if you want to connect two switches together, you would need a crossover cable. If you wanted to connect a switch to a pc, a straight through cable would work because they are different.

He didn't say a crossover switch. He said you need a crossover cable to connect both PCs together OR you need a switch and then you would need 2 straight through cables, one for each pc to connect to the switch.
