Whoever that guy was, he was trying to steal your identity obviously. But the thing is, is that he could have already had the other 7 numbers and just needed the last two to do some serious damage to your credit. This person could even know you, and that may be how he got the other SS numbers. Definitely keep an eye on your credit report, check your bank account amounts regularly, and if it happens again try to get the call back number or try *67 or dial the operator to get the number and report it to the police.

Sometimes they will say something like, This is Eric Bell from Master Card and we need to verify your card. I need the four numbers from the back of the card...'' This is such a scam... why would Master Card need your numbers? They already have them. Same with SS numbers. All credit reports already have them. So... good job. Never give any kind of numbers to anyone!

Good job! That was exactly what you SHOULD have done! Even with the last 2 digits of your SS#..scam artists can narrow down a person's identity..and if this happens..you're in a world of $hit.

Point is, a stranger should have NO (absolutely NO) reason to call you and ask you to verify ANY part of your social security number.
In facts, a FRIEND should have no reason to call you and ask that you verify any part of your social security number . . . let alone some stranger!

I guess you did the right thing, I'm curious as to what makes a person think anyone just give out information like that..

Good job, but I have fun with them and usually say 2 numbers at random. This way the jerk spends time trying to get something for nothing and fails.

you're very lucky, or just very smart. i work in online fraud, and i spend my day dealing with people who are dumb enough to give out their ssn, routing number, account number and credit card info on the phone, and then they are shocked when $1000's mysteriously leave their accounts

If it happens again, tell he you are going to go check and just leave the phone sitting there until he hangs up.
