If she only says that this woman slept with her husband then she cant be sued, cos that is true.
If she just calls her names or says things that are untrue she could get sued for libel.

You could be sued, for slander or some other form of defamation...
but proving this took place is another matter entirely. If there is positive evidence that the slander or whatever actually took place, and was untrue, and damaged somebody's reputation, you could find yourself having to pay damages.
Proving these things to the satisfaction of a Court is not quite as simple as it might sound. Try getting your next door neighbour or whoever to actually go to Court to give evidence, and, if he/she does so, being able to stand up to cross-examination.
A lawyer said, some years ago, that litigation was a last resort when all else has failed, and he was (and still is) quite right. Can your 'victim' even afford to sue, and maybe lose and have your costs awarded against them?
Would you benefit by winning such a case?
Isn't it easier to not call people names in the first place, and act like an adult?

Written slagging off which is untrue is called Libel.
Spoken slagging is called defamation. Each can be a Civil court but Libel is considered worse and has a higher court cost.

Defamation of character can be written (libel) or oral (slander). You have to prove that one was lowered in the estimation of right thinking members of society. It is really a civil action for the rich and was never intended to cover slagging off and name calling.

The person suing you has to prove it made them disgraced to the 'man in the street' and it was lies. The person being sued only has to prove it is true. It is not too hard to defend although it is time consuming but it is very hard to start proceedings and expensive. Anyway, why isn't she slagging off her husband - takes two to tango.
