Believe it or not, you can get into model railroading. The layouts don't have to be huge. You can get away with a shelf layout that only takes up about 2' x 6'. You can set it up so you can expand it later. I have one now that's only 2' deep but 14' long it sits in a corner and provides lots of running time and switching possibilities.
Here's two sites:

Model railroading lasts a lifetime.

Make some friends with larger places! Join a hobby group like the SCA or a woodworkers group that has facilities to use. The local woodturners group have a communal workshop. Our SCA group hires a hall for "Craft night" which can include anything from spinning, to illumination, to silk painting, to chainmail and building Viking chests. You can do just about anything in an apartment, as long as you don't need too much equipment. We had 3 of us living in a 2 bedroom flat, and my hubby made two chainmail shirts.

Steven D is right... I have a 2' shelf railroad that runs around my 10 x 12 bedroom.

I also have a card-table sized shop for building all my models and railroad stuff...

You can do just about ANYTHING in an apartment !!

www.scenearama.com offers many different projects that are focused towards students' class projects, but can also be an easy and cheap way to start the hobby of miniature landscaping. They have kits that come with everything you need to start building a diorama of your choosing. You can really use your imagination and create some really neat scenes with their product. Who knows, you might even want to start building miniature train scenes or something like that.
