This depends, if you want to surf internet all around your house, go wireless, but if you want a cheaper option, and don't care about sitting in one place when you're on the internet, get a wired router.

wireless.

If you use wired then you have to keep a wire connected to laptop all times if you want to use internet.

Wireless is best, you don't need the laptop connected with a wire so you can roam freely around the house. Although the reception might not be to good if there are many walls or floors between router and laptop. If the laptop doesn't have build in wireless card then you might need to buy one.

For laptops or desktops a wireless router is the best because you don't have to worry about running wires to it.

Most new laptops come with a wireless card built in so using them with a wireless router is super easy.

A new laptop most likely already has a wireless card installed. In order to utilize this feature, you will need a wireless router. I would suggest this over a wire because it's easier and you already have the wireless card in yourr laptop.

Hi Sparky 14
I got a lap top a couple of yrs ago. Had no idea how to use one. wanted broadband afraid of the cost of dial up. so got a wireless router from bt. set it up myself have had occasion to use the laptop in a different room for various reasons. I recommend going wireless. you can also add more laptops/desktops later on. I can not really see any advantage to being wired. if the line goes down it goes down on either.
Hope this helps

A wireless router will give you both options - wired & wireless.

you are getting good advices. But I want to add that some websites use SSL security for their password. (Lock icon on the browser) and others don't.

The ones that do not use the lock, those traffic can be grabbed out of the wireless signal.

Thus, a wired connection is ultimately more secure. (to a point).

A wired router will give higher transfer speeds up to 100mbs but means you can only use it in one location. wireless is more flexible but a bit slower but not really noticeable. get one that does both so you can choose.
