First try sprinkling baking soda on all the carpets and let sit over night. Then vacuum well. That will help a lot and without the awful floral scents left behind by the usual dry carpet sprinkles.
If you have a floor scrubber, the kind with brushes, Oreck sells a dry carpet powder that is the next step up in dry carpet cleaning. It must be agitated down into the fibers, hence the floor scrubber. Oreck will be happy to sell you their own agitator, but I find my old Hoover floor cleaner works as well. After a few hours the stuff must be vacuumed up. This also reduces stains, unlike baking soda.
If you still detect Fido, then go haead and get or rent a carpet cleaner. Some people like the Bissel, others the Hoover. I have the Hoover and am mostly pleased.
The final step is a professional cleaning and you might throw in the upholstery as well. Dog smells get there as well as on the carpet/drapes.
Remember, if the dog has had an accent, the stink might be down in the pad under the rug and no cleaning will get that out. You can cut the carpet, pull out and replace the pad and then reset the carpet.......always sniffing the underfloor as well. yes, it can cause problems all the way to the subfloor.

Use a product called Freshana Organic Solutions. It will change your life! Ok, not really, but come pretty close to it. :)
Here's what one of our awesome users had to say. Dana O. - Freshana rocks!!! Let's just say Oxy pet solution, Clorox Wipes, Orange floor cleaner, Fabuloso, and Lysol Neutra Air could not get rid of the disgusting odor that lingered after our 85 pound dog got the runs all over my hardwood floor. I remembered to grab my new can of Freshana as a last resort, and after several shots of it, the smell was gone. Gone! Now if only it worked that well to get rid of the dog too. Oops. Did I say that? ;)
Most importantly, as a chronic migraine sufferer, I have never found a product without strong perfume odors and chemicals that doesn't cause migraines or greatly irritate my sensitive body. Freshana has virtually no scent and no harsh chemicals and I finally have a product I can use and remain in the room! Awesome! Now there's only one problem... I need some more!!!

Something with a deodorizer in it. They make ones that get rid of pet smells. Walmart has it, and some places like pet co have carpet cleaners made for pet odors. You can always rent a carpet cleaning machine.

at petco there is some stuff called see spot go its a great product to get rid of pet stains and odor.
as for a carpet cleaner that depends on what you are after. heavy duty ones are expensive. I've had good luck with the Bissell pro steam unit

We shampoo as much as possible. We have three dogs and a cat and even though all three dogs are house broken every so often they choose to be stubborn and go on the carpet. Up until I read the responses that people gave you I thought there was just shampooing. Let me know if you find something else that works =)

Don't get rid of the dog!!! What a terrible idea. What you can do is pour baking soda over the stain and let it soak up. It soaks up the odor well, no fancy machines required.

If you put the carpet in sun occasionally the smell will go. You may use some room freshner to reduce the smell. Howver occasional washing of carpet is good idea. You may take help of some carpet cleaning agencies.

a carpet cleaner machine would be cool, or use a ''Super Oder Neutralizer'' made by Renuzit.
