Could anyone please balance this equation:
Mg+_HNO3 = Mg(NO3)2+_H20+2NO2
It would be nice if you could include an explanation too.

Mg+4HNO3 --> Mg(NO3)2+2H2O+2NO2

To balance equations, you have to make sure that there are an equal number of atoms of the same species on each side
e.g.: on the left hand side of the equation, after the balancing, there is one Mg. The right side also has one Mg.
There are 4 H's on the left side of the equation, because after balancing, you get a 4 in front of the HNO3. This means you have to multiply each atom in HNO3 by 4. Therefore, We also have 12 O atoms and 4 N atoms. We can see that there are the same number of atoms on the right hand side, so the equation is balanced.

Mg+_HNO3 = Mg(NO3)2+_H20+2NO2 This unbalanced equation shows...
On the left: Mg x 1; H x 1; N x 1 and O x 3.
On the right: Mg x 1; H x 2; N x 4; and O x 11.
The left side therefore needs at least 4 molecules of Nitric acid. Try that...
Mg + (4)HNO3 = Mg(NO3)2 + 2H2O + 2NO2
Left: Mg x 1; H x 4; N x 4 and O x 12
Right: Mg x 1; H x 4; N x 4 and O x 12...
The equaton is now balanced.

1st Stage
Mg + HNO3 = Mg(NO3)2 + H2O + NO2

2nd Stage
From the products we have 3 x N , 9 x O & 2 x H.
Because the amounts of N & O are odd numbers, double up the amounts throughout
6 x N ,18 x O & 4 H
So for HNO3 we need at least 4 moles So!!!!

Mg + 4HNO3 = Mg(NO3)2 +2H2O + 2NO2

Mg + 4 HNO3 = Mg(NO3)2 + 2 H2O + 2 NO2
Coefficients are added on either side of an equation so that the number of atoms of every element is equall when comparing the two sides of the equation.

They way i do it is to split it up into individual bits and then make the same numbers on each side, for example if you had HNO3 you know there is one H one N and three O. On the otherside there is Mg(NO3)2 so you know its one Mg two N and 6 O.
Then make the same on each side, so if for example you had H + O = H20 you know on theres one H and one O on the left hand side and two H and one O on the right hand side. Therefore you know to make the same you need to add another H on the left hand side so balanced it would be 2H + O = H2O, Hope that makes sense :-)

make sure you've got equal number of atoms and molecules of each type on both sides. its simple, just count and add.

you can never add Numbers after the symbol IE you cannot add atoms to each molecule but you can increases the amount of molecules that's why you add numbers to the front.
i suppose youve got the answer so therese no need to type that.
