After David tells his telepathic friends that he feels normal about Sophie even though she’s a deviant (because she has extra toes), they still find this doubtful and don’t agree with David’s judgement… how is this ironic??

It's ironic because they are all deviants. But because their defect is not visible they've been able to hide it. And they're so indoctrinated in the idea of "normal" that someone with a visible difference still bothers them.
