Runescape might be among the best of free ones, but doesn't compare to the major players like World of Warcraft, Star Wars Galaxies, Everquest etc.
The best out there currently is Vanguard: Saga of Heroes- it was unfinished at launch (the developer, Sigil ran outta cash and sold it to Sony Online Entertrainment) but now it's been revamped and is far better than anything else currently on the market.
Age of Conan and Warhammer are due out soon... we'll see if those are really the "next generation"!

Hellgate london with guild wars as a close second place runnerup,and WoW in 3rd place,runescape and maplestory suck by the way

Try TwelveSky, DreamOfMirrorOnline( Domo and 12sky are by aeriagames), Maplestory, WorldofWarcraft(by Blizzard).
