Republicans WANT to work......Democrats DON'T.

Traditionally, the Republicans are the party of business and the Democrats are the party of workers. Capitalism, we are taught, is a partnership between capital and labor, both sides are equal in power and each needs the other. Republicans are on the side of capital and Democrats on the side of labor.

The two philosophies are almost like a mirror-image of each other. Republicans think that by removing barriers for business, allowing business to do better, more jobs will be created and working people will do better too. Democrats believe by giving working people more power, they can do better, and businesses will do better because people will have more money to spend.

Anyway, that's the idea. In recent times, though, both parties have been on the side of business. This is partly because money has gotten so important in politics that any candidate who wants to campaign seriously has to sell out to big contributors, which means business. The 'center' between the two parties has moved way to the right. The Democrats area now about where the Republicans were 30 years ago, and the Republicans have moved way right of that. A 'liberal' today is about where a conservative was before Reagan got elected.

The problem is that there isn't really that much difference between Democrats and Republicans today. People put the Democrats in control of Congress because they felt the Bush administration had gone too far. But the Democrats are either powerless to stop him or else they don't -want- to stop him. A lot of Americans are worried about the Bush administration's flouting of the Constitution, their lack of respect for the constitutional limits of the executive branch. These actions create a precedent for future presidents. And it's really worrisome that none of the Democratic candidates for president have specifically promised not to use the Bush administration's excesses as precedents. In other words, Hillary might become the most powerful and abusive president in American history, because of what the Bush administration is doing today.
