If you look carefully at many of the pictures on Knitty, the people often have their faces turned away from the camera so all you see is hair. Have the model pose so that her body is facing the camera and her face is turned away from the camera, like she's looking at something behind her. Also, put a big floppy- brimmed hat on the models head and have her hold her head so all the camera sees is the hat brim. Or have the model hold her hands over her eyes, like she's shading them from the sun, and take the picture at an angle so the sweater is clear, but the face is covered. Have your model pretend she's someone famous and shielding her face from celebrity photgraphers...big sunglasses would help with the staging of this picture. You can digitally "blur" the face if you are using a tool such as photoshop with your camera. Finally, you can take the picture so the center of the picture is the sweater and the person's head is cut off the edge of the picture. It may look funny and it's considered bad photography, but there are many project pictures in knitty and other knitting sites- with cut-off heads. Just be sure that the sweater itself is clear in the picture. Oh and by the way...if the sweater pattern is accepted for publication...congrats! That's quite an accomplishment!

Take a picture of the sweater while someone wears it.
Better not wear it yourself while you take the photo yourself too, hard to control the camera that way.

When you make the photo, angle the camera in such a way that you can just see the bottom end of the chin, or have the model angle the face away from the camera.

If you do not have a friend to model or someone to take the photo while you wear it better have it displayed on a coat hanger, one with padded shoulders.
A good quality photo is better than a poor photo with someone wearing it.

Look on sites with patterns, like where you want to show yours, to see how others do it.

Put a scarf over the head of the person modeling the sweater. Tuck the ends into the neckline. Then you don't have the face of you or one of your friends in the photo. It can be a see through nylon scarf, which will blurr the face.

I always take a nylon scarf shopping with me to preserve my hair and makeup and protect the clothing I am trying on from my makeup in this way. It seems to me this would work perfectly for your pattern photography.

See if one of your friends' mothers or grandmothers has a dress form dummy (or call a local seamstress, she has one, I'm sure) and photograph the sweater on the dummy. If you have a small ladies clothing shop locally you may be able to borrow one of their mannequins or a shop display form long enough to take your pictures. Another option is to photograph the sweater as worn by an adult who can give consent for their picture to be shown. Aside from this, most on-line publications, as well as print publications, will either have the pattern you submit test knit for accuracy or reknit and professionally photographed.

Well, first of all, if people wanted to actually see your knitting technique, then I would imagine fitting in a face would just take up camera space. Try zooming in.
Another option is to use a camera angle that is nearly overhead, like over your shoulder. That would give an excellent shot of what you're doing and would put the viewer actually in the same seeing position that you are in, so I can definitely see the advantages of that.
Another option is you could always use a funny mask or something and just ham it up.
