1.Indian dances originated by telling indian stories in Epics like Ramayana,Mahabharath etc. They were created for devotional purposes. The Indian dance costumes are influenced by the costumes of the characters of the above epics. The costumes are colourful ,divine and out of world experience.
2.If you want to have deep insight in to Indian culture please read "Discovery of India" by Pt.Jawaherlal Nehru. This question requires several pages in writing.
4.The traditional Indian dances are Bharatha Natyam,Kuchipudi,Yakshagana Bayalattom.Thillansa,Kathahali and Mohiniattam. The style of THANDAVA dance closely resembles western music /dance of John Bovi type in steps and impact on ground.
The popular indian dance in Bollywood films(Hindi) now is a mixture of classical indian dances and Madonna/Britiny Spears type. This is called fusion dances or fusion music ,being a mixture of western and indian styles.
It is more or less different version of sakira or so and lacks any individuality.
The traditional indian dances are difficult to learn and it requires years to perform.Yet some people including foreginers learn them now.The remuneration paid for classical dance performers is not attractive and number of students are decreasing year by year.

Good question...I like Bollywood, some aspects of our own culture and it's fashion. I guess nowadays there is the Western influence which has come into the Bollywood film industry and off course Indian fashion. Can't really comment on the traditional Indian dance as I dont have that knowledge.
