A friend of sorts... The Artful Dodger, Jack Dawkins, guides Oliver off the streets of London, and into the employ of Fagin who runs a gang of pick-pockets.
In the 2005 Roman Polanski film, the fate of the Dodger is unclear... the gang is last seen in their "lair" when Bill Sikes carries Oliver up onto the roof in his escape attempt. We later see Fagin in prison, but we never see the Dodger again.
In the Dickens novel, Dodger is caught, convicted and sent to Australia
