as far as i am aware any child born in this country leaves the hospital with a social security number application already submitted by the hospital
in order to file taxes you have to have a social security number and anyone you claim as a dependent - child or elderly parent - has to have a SSN. if not every idiot in the country would be claiming non existant people!!

Why would a parent refuse to get their child a social security number? Some sort of political statement ? Well, sorry, it doesn't work that way. If your kid wants to be a ghost later on in life, that's their choice. But you can function in the US without a SS#.

If you want to claim as a dependent, you must provide a SS number. That is the law and the way it works, if not, then don't claim them.
Providing a SS number is how the gov't verifies the child exists, otherwise we could all just put names on our tax forms as dependents.

No because a social is required on the forms.

And I believe its actually illegal for a person born in the United States to not have a social number like a month after birth.

Don't they assign them AT birth anyway?

This question actually belongs under TAXES. That said, the IRS requires a SSN or ITIN for ALL dependents. An ITIN is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number and is assigned to individuals who are NOT ELIGIBLE for a SSN.

You can't claim a child as a dependant on your taxes without a SS# for them. I tryed to keep my son out of the system years ago, but couldn't claim him on my tax return, because he had no SS#. So I had to get him one when he was 5 yrs. old so I could claim him. (money was tight so I had no choice)

No-its a requirement nowdays for all kids. Esp. to claim them on taxes. Go to a smaller social sec. office and take the time-you are supposed to show two forms of ID. I used a hospital bill oe something and her birth certificate-it took about ! hour and was 15.00 dollars-easy. Silly not to-

no , and if i am not mistaken , there are now laws about getting a ss# the # is automatically applied for in the hospital when the child is born and the birth certificate is made up , so there is probably already a # issued , you should contact the local ss office and find out !
