About a week ago me and my friends went to a bar and one of my friends had a little too much to drink and went to play the jukebox and kept on putting quarters in the jukebox and it didn't work so he punched it (not thinking it was going to damage it) however the glass broke! The bouncer then took his wallet and information and told him the damage is $2,000 and he said okay ill pay for it....

THEN THE BOUNCER WENT OUTSIDE AND HARRASSED HIM AND TRIED TO FIGHT HIM.... after he agreed to pay..

SO here is the question..
As a friend I don't think he did 2,000 damage because thats how much the jukebox is worth brand new.... he did nothing but damage the glass.. he got harrassed and got in a fight because the bouncer... even us girls jumped in and got the bouncer off who also tried to fight us...

soo basically today he is suppose to go to the bar and pay 2,000 and Im saying NO WAY!! I think he should get a lawyer and he can also press charges against the bouncer.. What would you do

Defo press charges....There are enough witnesses to show the guy acted with excessive force against a drunk and incapacitated person (your friend)

Also...it's not the bouncers place to decide on a price and when to pay.

That decision can only be made by the owner after either
a) checking with his insurance...if it's covered your friend may only have to pay the excess..

b) after having the machine assessed for repair.

Tell your friend to write to the owner.....find out what he intends to do to have the machine repaired and also to contact a company that repairs jukeboxes to have his own quote so that he's not ripped off by the owner.

Get him to speak to the police first.... Good luck

The lawyer will cost a lot more that the $2000 for the jukebox. Your friend has it to lose in this situation, he was drunk and a good lawyer would argue that he was also violent (the punched out jukebox). If there were security cameras in or outside the bar the evidence could be damning and your friend will end up paying the damages and for the other parties attorney.
Let him pay for the jukebox (make sure he gets a receipt and/or letter releasing him from further damages) and next time don't drink so much - alcohol makes normally smart people do very stupid things.

My recommendation for your friend:
I would call the owner of the bar, offer to make things right, and forget about ever dealing with the bouncer. Your witnesses might want to list their names and phone numbers for references, to show the owner that this was definitely not just your version of the incident. Don't give the names and phone numbers to the owner yet, however. Just name how many witnesses have volunteered to come forward on your behalf. Also, it would help if some of those witnesses were sober - which could be a stretch at a bar, but nevertheless worth a try. Also, I would call around to see how much replacing the glass actually costs, before accepting a damages amount.
Your friend sounds like a responsible person - we need more people like him these days.

No lawyer is going to give advice on here. Without knowing what state you're in, it's impossible to know what the laws are, and if a lawyer were not licensed in that state, he would be practicing without a license in advising your friend.

All that said, your advice to your friend seems sound. It's possible the bouncer assaulted and/or battered one or more members of your group. It also seems like the measure of damages would not be the cost of a new jukebox. But since I don't know where you are, or anything other than what you have said here, I have no idea.

Good luck.

Here is an article called "How to Find Legal Help When You Can't Afford It" - it has legal information and legal assistance for every state.

The bar probably has insurance that already covered the damage. just a thought. I agree that before your friend does something that sounds really stupid, he should at least consult with a lawyer, which contrary to popular belief, is not that expensive. I can't tell you or your friend what to do, except to get legal help before taking any action. Especially about how to get that wallet back - the police might have to become involved and this sounds like a fairly complicated situation, so your friend can try to protect his rights and his money by seeking a consultation with a lawyer.

Consultations are usually either free or for a limited amount of money. The article linked above described other types of legal assistance that people may not generally be aware of.
