assuming you are using a wireless network you need to make sure you have your network security password enabled.
To do this go to IE and type in 192.168.1.1 it asks you to login don't put a username just enter "admin" in the password box.
Next, you'll see a menu screen with some tabs like "setup" "wireless" "security" etc click on "wireless" you'll see the option of wireless security click on enable. Next you need to create a network password. To do this enter a password in the "passphrase" box. Some kind of word or phrase you would use as a password say for email or somthing. It will encrypt the phrase to a "scrambled word" that is hard to break for someone trying to get free internet for example.
If you have a gaming system you'll have to write down the password and go into your online gaming settings and enter the password (if connecting on your gaming console wirelessly)

if you have a wireless router they can be logged onto by any wireless device.
my belkin has an ip address if you look in the book it will give it ie 192.168. blah blah
type this into you internet bar at the top not google search this will find the router set up page,
make sure you have the security on as high a possible this may mean reconfigering it and all your devices but it must be done.
this will make it impossible to hack in without passcode.
also i=untick box saying broadcast name this makes it invisable to the world. this will make it as safe a you can.
if you connect to the router on a wirless conection this is unsfafe for anything to do with personal detail conect via a cable to router this is safer.
no conection is completly safe these days but make it as hard as poss to hack.
if you want to check for hackers there is a list of attempted hack in the router and you can see by the ip addresses who is logged on to your router.
with your lap top or any wireless card seach available networks you will find loads in a busy strret they should be secured network if not you would be able to connect to it it's that easy.

If you mean your WiFi connection, enable WPA encryption on your router and create a strong Pass Phrase. Then, enter it into Windows, when prompted.
This is all explained in the Router User Manual.
Don't have WiFi or a wireless router? You're are safe.
