Where does it come from?

It comes from experience. It's not 100% accurate but what is actually happening is that you are using information/experiences/outcomes based on what has happened before and is therefore somewhat more likely to happen again. If you have a gut feeling that someone is lying, for example, you are, consciously or unconsciously, picking up signals from them which are similar to those that you know for past experience, have been given off by someone who is lying.

It's worthwhile taking notice of gut feelings but not relying on them totally.

First of all "A Gut feeling" may never be accurate ..... But is it a second sense or warning device that sometimes goes off in a certain situation....
I have been in human resources for 15 plus years an have heard many stories about their gut feelings on a decision and found that most were wrong including my own, because we are human an we do judge people subconsciously.

Wow...what a good question, hehe.

I think that naturally, we are survivalists, as is the rest of the nature. We strive towards the survival of our species - reproduction and progress, though in my mind, I question the logic we use when we kill innocent life or hurt others, for reasons that have nothing to do with survivalism, unlike the rest of nature.

In my opinion, the "gut feeling" could be an intuitive part of ourselves that is meant for self preservation, but sometimes, our feelings or thoughts (pre-conditioned) can have a strong influence over what we think are gut feelings, and we may confuse THOSE with intuition.

So, I don't think that they are necessarily always accurate, maybe a balance between intuition, rationality and feelings.
But then again, who knows?
The human mind and psyche are still enigmatic to me, and these are just my thoughts.

A couple of theroies of mine.

1. The person is exceptionally preceptive. Meaning the person is so in tune with people and their surroundings that when the slightest detail is altered they inately know and thus get a gut feeling that something is wrong with the picture.

2. It could be actually paranormal. A 6th sense, so-to-speak. Its valid, but impossible to prove.

Intuition - my gut feelings are always 100% accurate. Anytime I don't follow them I get into trouble. I learned to always listen to gut feelings and pay close attention to them!

It comes from human instinct, and it can only be right with things natural. Like you may have a 'gut feeling' that a certain animal should be avoided because it is dangerous- natural instinct.

was it ever that accurate?
gut feeling or intuition is just a process or series of processes in our minds that leads us to instant conclusions.
what our mind does is that, as it perceives information, (perceived thru the senses:sight, smell, touch,hear,taste...)
it processes the information, combining with previous (perhaps dormant) perceived inputs which somehow finds it way to the interpretation chamber of your brain, and links it with the recent info at hand, and , voila... your gut feeling!

at least, that's how i understand it.

I don't have a good answer, but it happens to me & my wife all of the time well think of someone right before they die or I'll think about a peice of mail I should have gotten & it will be in the box that day. I'll think of someone & they will call. My grandma went & seen all of her children & grandchildren a week before she died. My mother had this same insite. Just enjoy it, & learn to trust it. It may save your life one day.
