Why are people so hung up on wearing name brands? American Eagle, Hollister, Abercrombie & Fitch. Everywhere i go, i see people sporting these name brands, Ask what kind of shirt to buy on this very site, and i can guarantee that 95% of the answers will include the brands i mentioned above. Why are people so willing to spend $60 on a shirt? or $70 on a pair of jeans? It isn't the quality, because you can get the same quality clothes at wal-mart for a fraction of the price. So what is it then? Is it an ego boost? Popularity boost? Do people feel superior to others because there clothes have an expensive name brand splattered across the front?

Wow, I think there are so many answers to this question! I think people do it for popularity issues overall. No young person wants to say they got their clothing at walmart. That would give them a bad image to their peers! They feel that if they go and spend more money for a brand name that they will fit in better and it will make them feel more superior knowing they can afford to buy expensive clothes and that they can be like everyone else. If you look at the tags on a name brand item and compare it to a walmart item, they are going to be made pretty much of the same materials and have the same quality. There's absolutely no reason to go spend that much on a clothing item when you can get the same quality elsewhere for a decent price. Anyone who feels the need to fit in by spending lots of money on clothing has bigger issues than popularity. They need to sit back and realize they are just trying to act like someone else by doing that. What ever happened to individuality?

One reason is that some people, for some strange reason find it embarrasing to buy discount clothes. Like, for some reason, to those people, this is embarrassing: "I buy my clothes from Wal-Mart." and, "My shirt was only $10."

The simple reason is that it becomes "pop culture" to wear these clothes and people who need to feel that they are part of it follow.

A sense of belonging and feeling "normal." That's what brands offer.
