No question laws needed changing, horrific and terrible injustices were commonplace before 1970....
Now that the laws have long been changed, civil rights leaders like Sharpton and Jackson consistently and aggresively pervert Dr King's message- "to unite the races, to forgive, to heal wounds"; Dr King's message is God's message. I won't argue King, the man, wasn't flawed, it's his message that we honor; that's what it is all about.
The laws have long been changed and it's time to cease inciting racial conflict. Sure, racisim exists and needs to end but race baiters prolong the conflict, instead of healing.
Wouldn't it be a tribute to Dr King to proclaim Sharpton, Jackson and all other opportunists to be silenced and politicaly excommunicated on the forthcoming Dr King holiday?

crabby- the fact that Sharpton and other wrong doers claim to speak for all black Americans, or at least the media thinks so, interesting that it bothers you absolutely zero? Could it be that race baiters are in partnership with democrats? yes, that's it. The actions of Sharpton and Jackson are indefensible, so you rationalize other injustices that are worse, because the others don't conflict with the goals of socialism.

Ambrose- you define the problem; you defend "getting even", you are the problem.
You clearly don't understand Dr King's message, instead, you are one of the many who wrap black civil rights with every other cause for advancing liberalism. Like labor unions, at one time were necessary, your "cause" will not go away after laws have been clearly changed; socialism is your true goal, whether you want to be honest and admit or live in denial, like many liberals.

oops- you embody liberal logic, comparing Sean Hannity to the KKK (Sen Byrd's group); anyone who disagrees with a socialist is a criminal, a racist or evil. It doesn't bother you that Jackson and Sharpton are increasing racial conflict, not trying to heal wounds. You clearly don't get Dr King's message, do you?

Racism still exist but I agree that the race card is being played a little to often, because of that the actually accounts of racism existing has a cloud of doubt cast over it.
Civil rights of minorities have come a long way, but you have to remember that most of these laws have only been in place for 40 years. Anglo-Americans have had the access to equality since the start of the Colonies some 300+ years ago. When Americans stop seeing color and start too unite, equality will always be a movement minorities are set out to achieve.
I am a Black American and I do not see Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson as leaders of the Black Community. To me leaders have the ability of fighting the battles that a group faces from a major block of people but also try to stop the internal problem that a group may face. Sharpton and Jackson will not do this and therefore making them ineffective leaders.
I am an American, but I have to prove that I have the ability to work in my position as well or even better then my white counterpart. This is not a myth, being a minority you have to work harder to prove your worth. A white male with a High School Diploma has more of a chance of obtaining the same job over a minority with an AA degree. Until facts like this are resolved then we cannot say that civil rights are entering a point being just revengeful.

Sure. What you suggest is that everyone just sort of ignore it and forget about it, even while the racism boils over and even while white males still obviously continue to have the upper hand in most areas of government and business, overwhelmingly possessing positions of power and collecting more and more power and money while the rest of us get less and less. It's true that perhaps Sharpton and Jackson in some ways "pervert" Dr. King's message, but there's more at work in systems of racism and oppression than people realize. Americans forget that our country would be nothing it is today if it hadn't been for the unpaid slave labor of blacks. And these years of unpaid labor and years of having whites actually *fight* about whether blacks were human or not has contributed to the plight of blacks in America today. People ignore this.

Earlier this year, Boise State college football player Ian Johnson proposed to white cheerleader Chrissy Popadics. Idaho residents were outraged. The couple actually received *death threats* and did not feel safe at their own wedding. You can't look at a story like this, occuring in the frickin' year 2007, and say the "healing" you claim will come soon is occurring in any visible way: http://www.idahostatesman.com/localnews/story/118115.html . No one should have to be surrounded by such hate that they must put up with *death threats* while going about their daily lives, doing the same things other people normally do with no problems.

ABSO-FRIGGIN-LUTELY!
It isn't about being "fair" anymore. it's about getting even. It seems like every chance blacks, hispanics, asians, and other minorities get they segregate THEMSELVES from the norm. How else do you explain the following:
* Miss Black America?
* United ***** College Fund?
* Jet Magazine?
* Movies that poke fun at white people dating black people
* Black pride day
* Brown pride day
If I were to show up to work wearing a "white pride" t-shirt on casual fridays the way all the hispanics wear "brown pride" shirts, I'd be labelled a racist and sent home. Bottom line is that we are ALL AMERICANS. There is no room in this country for African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Mexican-Americans. Either you're hear to be an AMERICAN or you're not. And if your place of origin is so damn great, then go back!

So you lead the parade to cry about the Sharptons and Jacksons and their message or lack thereof, yet I see no one activel;y decrying Sean Hannity leading a KKK rally at the Sharpesburg Battlefield. The only thing that happened is they took him off the radio for a week!!! Talk about a foul and disgusting excuse for a human being.
Byrd never hid his involvement with the klan and acknowledeges his mistakes. Hannity tries to hide his involvement and tries to hide his funding from the National Socialists!!!
Geez....

Sharpton and Jackson make sure to keep the racial division alive....it's their bread and butter.
After all, if there were no racism, who would even know about those clowns?
I hope they rot in hell.
EDIT: Drew Blood, good examples but you forgot BET, the television channel.

No, it hasn't. Sharpton, Jackson are admittedly opportunists. But the closet racists are always quick to point to the few jerks running around that happen to be black--and ignore or actively defend the many examples of whites who continue to engage in racist activities.
Cases in point: why are you whining about Sharpton and NOT castigating people like Mike Huckabee for his blatent bigotry aginst AIDS sufferers. Or calling attention to the growing membership of the KKK? Did you object to Imus' disgusting racist remarks? Are you upset over the continuing discrimination against African-Americans in our public schools?
Unless and until the whites who want to make a big deal out of a few lodmouths sstart doing something to actually fix the very real problems racism still causes, their whining rings hollow--its nothing but empty hypocrisy designed to give them an excuse to spread their bigotry and hate.

yes. anyone who is claiming race to put themselves apart is being racist. civil rights were made to give everyone a level playing field, not to put all other races above the white race and then have them exclude them from certain causes.
