This work for Word 2000, 2002 or XP, 2003 (I don't know for Word 2007):

You need to use the Symbol dialog box to enter symbols, such as ¼,½,¾ and ©, or special characters, such as an em dash (—), that are not on your keyboard.

Insert a symbol:
1.- Click where you want to insert the symbol.
2.- On the Insert menu, click Symbol, and then click the Symbols tab.
3.- In the Font box, click the font that you want.
4.- If you want to get a close-up view of a symbol, click it.
5.- Double-click the symbol that you want to insert.
Tip If you’re using an expanded font, such as Arial or Times New Roman, the Subset list appears. Use this list to choose from an extended list of language characters, including Greek and Russian (Cyrillic), if available.

MANUAL METHOD
If I don't want to go thru the process of inserting a symbol and the manual option, then:
holding down the key type the following numbers:
Alt+0188 ¼
Alt+0189 ½
Alt+0190 ¾

Other useful symbols for superscript are :
Alt+0186 º
Alt+0185 ¹
Alt+0178 ²
Alt+0179 ³
Alt+0170 ª

For almost any Font with SUBSET: Number-Forms, you could get other fractions (1/3, 2/3, 1/8,3/8,5/8,7/8) but you cannot use the manual method.
Check also SUBSET: Superscripts-and-Subscripts or Letterlike-symbols.

WORKING WITH EQUATIONS OR FORMULAS
But if what you want to do, is to insert a formula or equation then:
Insert an equation
1.- Click where you want to insert the equation.
2.- On the Insert menu, click Object, and then click the tab: Create-New
3.- In the Object type box, click Microsoft Equation 3.0.
4.- Click OK.
5.- Build the equation by selecting symbols from the Equation toolbar and by typing variables and numbers. From the top row of the Equation toolbar, you can choose from more than 150 mathematical symbols. From the bottom row, you can choose from a variety of templates or frameworks that contain symbols such as fractions, integrals, and summations.
If you need help, click Equation Editor Help Topics on the Help menu.
6.- To return to Word, click the Word document.

Note: If Microsoft Equation Editor is not available, you may need to install it, you would need your original CD/DVD of Word/Office to install it.

there are a few fractions that u can get in the form u wanted in microsoft word. go to 'insert' tab and click on 'symbol'.then find the fraction u want. but the fraction available there are only the simple ones like 1/2, 1/4, 3/4, 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, 7/8, 1/3 and 2/3. i guess u still need the slash for other fractions.
