We burned a gas fire without opening the flue. Now the white stone front of the fireplace is black soot.

Try using the Mr. Clean Magic Erasers on the stone. They work great on just about anything. However, after you have gotten the soot removed, use some paste car polish or Butcher's Wax on the stones to protect them in the future.

Dawn dish soap & hot water. If you have Marble or Granite make sure to dry it, even if it does not feel wet. Water and natural stone are not a good mix. You may want to wash the walls too. This happen to a friend. Very Big mess.

A mild solution of muratic acid sprayed on the doors works great. Use a well ventilated area.
