I promise this won’t be a very long question. This pertains to their song April 29, 1992 (Miami). Obviously, this was about the Rodney King riots that took place in Los Angeles after the verdicts. Again, I’m also aware that smaller riots took place all over the country. That being said, why did Sublime incorporate the city of Miami in the song title instead of, I don’t know, Los Angeles?

Terry Legendary - OK, but what does Miami have to do with any of that?

SJG - LOL, I'm sure Bradley was merely stocking up on some "forty ounces to freedom." And thank you!

I believe Sippers is right about the Liberty City riots.
My history is a bit sketchy, but I believe that an African American was killed by a few officers of the Miami police and because their verdicts were not strict enough, many people were upset and started rioting....creating one of the worst riots of the 20th century.
However, because of the confusion, I still don't get why they didn't just use LA in the title since it was about the Rodney King Riots.

EDIT: Cheatingly I used the wikipedia article and it says that a # of cities actually had riots on that day and the Miami was one of them. I know it's just Wiki...but maybe the Liberty City riots had nothing to do with the title?

I think they are citing 2 riots with 1 title.

The one you mentioned and the liberty city riot in 1980.

They did.

"Riots on the streets of Miami
Whoa, riots on the streets of Chicago
On the streets of Long Beach
In San Francisco"

Also, keep in mind, the guys live(d) in LA, not Miami.

I think they are talking about a collective riot nationwide and saying that the police problem with butality and racism was getting out of hand at the time so it was time for people to stand up

pretty much anarchy until things change

Because LA was obviously under attack :)

Perhaps its also because they're from Cali and are telling the tale of their looting spree IN LA.
