Overtime was originally started in the 1927-28 season
After the 1942-43 season, overtime was suspended due to wartime restrictions on train schedules
In 1982, the Quebec Nordiques GM (Maurice Filion) successfully lobbied the other GMs and their respective owners to have a 5 minute period (the idea was originally to have 10). In 1983, the NHLPA agreed to the OT period and starting with the 1983-84 season, Regular Season OT became a reality once again.

For the 1983-84 season, the NHL introduced a regular season overtime period of five minutes, compared to the twenty minutes of regulation periods. If the five minute overtime period ended with no scoring, the game was a tie.

1983-1984 they started a five minute overtime for the regular season. the playoffs are continuous "periods" until someone scores. however, after the lockout, the shootout was introduced as a part of the game if both teams failed to score in a 4-4 5 minute period. however, the shootout is not part of the playoff overtime scenerio.
