I use firefox in Linux even.
When you first open a firefox tab it says Untitled until you go to an address. Type something in the address bar and hit enter and you should be on your way.

Some say Firefox is a great browser but I haven't found that to be true. I switched to Firefox because Yahoo said Safari wasn't compatible with their new mail system. The trouble was Firefox kept intermittently locking up while I was on Y/A. Sometimes I could get it going again and sometimes I'd have to reboot the computer. Since switching back to Safari I've had no problems and just use an offline mail so I don't have to be concerned with compatibility issues with Yahoo mail. My advice is to find a different browser. Firefox is trouble prone.
