or is his/her participation purely voluntary?
Does P&S etiquette at least call for a small gratuity?

Ahhhh friend ... I always laugh more at the number of people who DON'T get your sense of humor than your actual questions!! And you know how funny I think you darn questions are! =)

As far a your thumbs down stalker ... they only find it necessary to stalk you out of jealousy because of your hilarious and sharp wit. Or because the simple minded cannot stand the sheer frustration of just not "getting" your questions. And, of course, there is jealousy that also arises from all the wonderful answers your contacts here who do "get it" give. They simply cannot compete and resort to "thumbs downing" out of the simple and maddening inability to compete!!

Gratuity? Nooooooooo. Your gratuity comes in the form of the brain strain they face daily in trying to comprehend or understand your level of intellect. I'd say that's about all the gratuity they deserve ... and sc*rew P & S etiquette ... their lack of any at all ~ surely does NOT entitle them to ANY from you my dear!

Peace.

Hmm now that's a question. I'd say it depends what country they come from. In my experience from travelling around the world, many countries use a thumbs down or middle finger to say "hello" or "thank you" I used it frequently in France whilst visiting the local restaurants to communicate with the chef. I was asked to leave but I think that was more to do with the cultural clash and my many uses of the bread rolls.

Yes you do need to pay them back by hunting them down and returning the favour of thumbs down when ever you can.
Also get all your friends to do the same.

You owe him/her nothing, I believe the gratuity only applies when it is a thumbs up stalker and then a smile should suffice!!

I've found only one way to pay these illusive creatures. I've constructed a small voodoo doll in the shape of a human sphincter, so that no matter which one arrives on the scene, their excruciating payment is correctly administered.

I think that just like with presents, it's better to give than to receive. This is a purely volunteer activity, so I don't think that he or she would do this if they didn't enjoy it so much.

You ARE a dear for offering, though.

sure it does..

a small gratuity... namely 15%( maximum) return in violation notices to the stalker would be in order here...
