I understand that the conventional method is to use the starter motor to crank the flywheel in order to start the engine moving. But i heard that it is possible to crank elsewhere besides the flywheel. So i was wonder if it is possible.

If anyone have an answer or a website pls share. Thank you.

According to a friend of mine who works in a Mercedes dealer, he told me that for certain AMD models it drive thru Aux gears to start spining the engine, it could be some shaft that is connected.

Any technical expert can elaborate? Thanks.

Thanks for all the answers.

Thxs philip i understand the other method of starting the veh such as push-start and jump-start.

Actually i'm just curious that can the starter motor be attached at another location besides the flywheel.

Yes i agree with you that the motorcycle the startermotor directly crank the gears in the gearbox which is also closely attached to the multiplate clutch and charging coils.

Maybe a car can also crank from a direct gear? Just wondering

If you are designing an engine from scratch, a gear could be mounted anywhere on the crankshaft. As long as you can turn the crankshaft fast enough, you can start the engine.

The first automobiles did not have starters. They actually were started by turning a hand crank in the front of the engine. (that is where the name crankshaft came from)

on motorbikes the starter motor can be incorporated in the gear box ( Harley Davidson). or can operate off of the clutch basket. or off of the alternator flywheel.

Cars have the starter motor on the ring gear on the flywheel attached to the crank.
If it is a manual stick shift with a manual clutch you can BUMP START the vehicle by pushing or towing the vehicle in gear with the brakes off and the clutch engaged and the ignition switch in the on position.
Also you can JUMP start a car by using high power leads and another vehicle with a fully charged battery.
Could this be what you mean?

nope the starter motor has to be on the flywheel because the starter motor uses a toothed gear and the flywheel has teeth if you try to crank on the other side with the pulley the gears wont engage
