It depends on the dog that you are dressing. If the dog likes clothes and doesn't go into a depression over the issue then I say go for it!
I have a minpin that adores his clothes and would wear sweaters in the summer if I let him. For him it is cute and I am for it 100%. On the other hand I have a Bull Terrier named Maybell that when we have put clothes on her has acted like she was caught getting into the trash she is so ashamed and depressed looking! For her closthes are bad.
So, as I said before, it all depends on the dog and if they mind it or not.

Unless it's for a practical purpose (cold weather and a small puppy, or a sick, short- or thin-furred cat or dog) I consider it frivolous and cruel. Most dogs have thick enough fur to manage fine without clothing.
Obviously if it's 30 degrees below Celsius and the dog is one of those warm-climate breeds with little to no fur, it needs a bit of help staying warm, but a "cute" t-shirt or jumper on a dog at +30 C is a bit much - to put it mildly!

Any time an animal is made to look or act like a human is cruel. Animals shouldn't wear clothing, ride bikes, jump through flaming hoops, shoot baskets, or eat at the dinner table.
Dogs and cats should be loved for what they are.
And sweaters on dogs look ridiculous.

Aside from the real sweaters that actually serve a purpose, I think the rest is just overkill.
Personally, I don't see dogs as children, I see them as working animals. I've been around farm dogs and herding dogs since I was little so to me dogs are companions, but they have a purpose and a job. From that standpoint not only do you have the money to shovel out hundreds of dollars for a wardrobe for your dogs, but it's just inefficient.
My grandmother has a very overweight dog that she enjoys dressing up. She loves to put anything on that dog, but the dog just kinda walks around with this look on her face like what the heck did she put on me?
I think the "Designer Dogs" look cute with clothes on, but once again, I don't see a need for them so I don't see a need for the clothes...it's just overkill.

My daughters small dog has a wardrobe of mostly sweaters and loves to dress up. She wears them only in winter and is so tiny and old, in order to keep from freezing, she needs her coat on. However, her other dog does not wear any clothes as he is young, healthy and has a nice fur coat. It can be cruel but it can be a Godsend. It all depends on the dog.

I say it is CRUEL to put clothes on an animal! Animals have fur to keep them warm they don't need clothes! Plus, if you do put clothes on your animal it won't like you very much.

Some animals hate it, some love it. My dog doesn't want his sweater unless he's going outside and it's really cold. In this situation he will bring me his sweater before he "asks" to go outside. He loves wearing his collar or a bandana around his neck though.

I agree with the others on this one. I do have a warm coat for my frenchie, but he is so broad in the chest that I like to keep him and his chest warm. I really dont want my lil bud to get sick. But really? Whats the point if its not for a purpose????

For certain dogs susceptible to cold, fine. Otherwise, stupid.
Cutesy clothes - ridiculous.
