I have had the stroke 5 years ago and still struggling with recovery and my leg and arm muscles seem spastic. Will I ever get the movement back with prolonged exercise? There is no problem with speech or memory, only with movement on left side. Can you help, please

I am not a neurosurgeon, but sometimes some brain damage can be permanent , other times people can gain back their original level of function. Five years is a long time. I would think that most recovery is accomplished fairly soon (say a few months to a year after the stroke?). Probably exercise wouldn't hurt, if you don't overdo it. I wouldn't say give up hope, but don't be too hard on yourself if you do have still some problems. If you can get into some sort of stroke support group, that might be helpful to you and of course you could go to a neurologist and see what they say. Check with your local American Heart Association and see if they know about any stroke support groups in your area. Sometimes doctors prescribe muscle relaxers for muscle spasticity...ask your doctor if this would be helpful for your condition.

Here is a list of clinical trials for stroke patients/survivors that you might be interested in..click on maps tab to find local trials..

I'd say something stupid like i do with all the other answers but this sounds serious.

But i guess thats my point, yahoo answers are innacurate half the time because dimwits like me just come on and say dumb things for the heck of it. If this will really effect your life, you should go see a real doctor whom you really trust rather than ask strangers who could be just pretending. Im not kidding. Every number you get, every reassurance you read could just be another irressponsible person have a laugh.

(GO SEE A DOCTOR! PLEASE!)

I highly doubt there are any neurosurgeons on this site. You can check with the AMA (if you live in the U.S.) to see about a reputable neurosurgeon in your area. You can be doing better than you are with proper therapy and medication. Good luck.

You won't find any neurosurgeons on here, but I can guess that if you work hard in physical therapy, it would help a great deal.
