I know that 'to sit on the edge of your seat' means, basically, to be on the alert - in suspense - waiting for something to happen that'll either break the suspense or change your life.

To 'sit on the edge of a precipice' is another one; it means that you're already dangerously close to doing something that maybe you shouldn't do. It could also mean that you're close to a mental breakdown. Either way ... something explosive is bound to happen - or is really, really close to happening - to break down that last barrier and cause you to teeter over the edge.

I am not sure what exactly you mean so here are a few examples.

on the edge of your seat means the person is engrossed in something usually pretty intense and they are ready to jump to their feet.

a person being on edge means that they are easily aggravated.

a person on the fence means they have yet to commit to one of several courses of action, usually only two though

although perhaps a person sitting on the edge is referring to the idea of sitting on the edge of a cliff and they are contemplating jumping. This choice is similar to my last example although the choice is only to do or not to do some specific thing.

The edge of something is the end of it, the outer limit. You can sit on the edge of your desk, on the edge of a chair, on the edge of a cliff.

As stated by someone else, "sitting on the edge of your seat" is used to indicate tension or anticipation. You are ready to jump up out of the seat as quickly as possible. (And the winner is ! ..... NISIM2 !!!!! (yaayyyy!))

Whether I'm sitting, standing, walking or whatever, when I'm on the edge I'm usually in a place that is somewhere between order and chaos.
