how do you play dvd on a x box?

All you have to do is put the dvd in the disk tray. I am pretty sure you have to buy a remote for playing the dvd's. Most stores that sell video games, like best buy, should have these remotes for sale.

If you have the original xbox, you need the DVD remote control and plug-in adapter. This is a $35 accessory.

If you have a 360 - just put the disk in the drive and it should start playing like a normal DVD player.
