The main job of a p trap is to hold a "plug" of water as a seal so sewer gasses cannot come up through your drains. As long as the water is held there, you can run your pipes anyway you want.

no. By the way question reads, I don't believe you are at all.
The legal way to run a trap arm(on new construction) is like this.
From the sink drain, the pipe going down is called a Tailpiece. That goes into the P-trap. The trap consists of a dip and wier(the wier is the 90). So you go from the tailpiece to the dip to the wier. Most applications under a sink, use Slip Joint fittings(no glue to seal joints). With a SJ P-trap assembly, the wier fitting also becomes the Trap Arm. So from the dip to the weir(bend), you go into the trap arm. Here is where I think your question will get answered. The trap arm must go into the San-Tee(usually the drain in the wall) without 90ing or dipping down with fittings at all. Maybe, if I am on the right track, all you need is a Tail Piece Extension. that would allow a trap arm to go horizontally straight into the San tee. hope i helped

Not sure what you mean or are trying to do. The problem with S-traps is venting. Without a vent, water in the trap that forms a seal against sewer gas, can be sucked out. I cut the riser pipe below the S-trap and installed a tee. One opening on the tee (side outlet) has a P-trap installed and the top opening has a Studor Vent.
